Beatles Cover: "Rain"

1 August 2015: In my home studio for the afternoon

”Rain” caught my attention because of the lyric content. I hear so many conversations about the weather. People complain when it’s too hot, too cold, stormy, and all manner of complaints. We spend lots of time and money trying to predict the weather. I’m not throwing stones here, I really enjoy meteorology and watching the weather entertainment. But this song got me thinking about my own efforts to live in the moment and fully experience each moment of our lives, making each moment matter by being completely present. That and the slightly sitar drone feel to the chorus that gives the song somewhat of an Indian Raga feel all caught my attention.

The original recording is found on the Beatles album, Revolver and was a “B” side to “Paperback Writer”. Due to the early stereo experimentation the original recording separated of the lead and background vocals into separate channels completely left and right, it was easy to mix out John’s vocal during the verses and Paul and George’s during the chorus by blending one side and then the other back into a centered stereo split. I then recorded my own voice singing two channels of lead vocal and punched in a T.C.Helicon during the chorus sections to make the harmonies sound very full.

You can hear the results with this Soundcloud link.
